The Building

The building that housed the Inn and its Restaurant, Pope’s Tavern was built in approximately 1880 and expanded in 1991. In 2005, current owners purchased the business and the real estate and began an extensive renovation that included:
Replacing all bathrooms, new ceramic tile etc.
Replacing all upper level flooring, including hardwood and carpets,Paint and repair throughout
New bathroom on 1st floor
Updated structural details as needed
Gutting and updating most kitchen equipment
New front of building brickwork and planters

During the period from 2005 to present ongoing updates have been performed as needed including:
New porch roofing
New kitchen flooring including plumbing and electric
New appliances
New A/C in all rooms
New Siding in North and South sides of building
Gardening in rear yard

During the owners tenure, renovations, maintenance and upkeep in excess of $300,000 has been expended to make sure building and operation is completely functional and ongoing.

Currently, to owners knowledge, the current physical plant needs are limited to cosmetic only.

The Rooms
The Inn side of the business offer 7 rooms with private bath, plus one extra bedroom that, added to another room booking, provides a 2 bedroom, 1 bath family suite.

Owners Living Suite
The owners currently occupy most of the 2nd Floor as their living suite. The suite has 3 bedrooms (1 being used as an office and 1 being used as a large ‘dressing room, closet’. There are two bathrooms, with one needing renovation. In addition a 250 sq ft parlor offers water views of town creek.

2nd Floor, Rear
The 2nd floor in the rear contains a small managers office, laundry and support for the inn rooms and an extra bedroom with closet and bath that has been used for a managers living accommodation.

Wine Cellar
With a 5.5’ clearance, and accessed thru the bar, over 50% of the 1st floor has a ‘crawl space’ underneath that is the perfect temperature year round for storing wine. It is used as a wine cellar storage.

Front Porch
The front porch is the most popular public gathering spot in Oxford. It seats over 20 people for al fresco dining, weather depending, and is booked well in advance by those in the know.

Rear
The rear has a storage shed for the kitchen as well as an historic old chicken shed that is used for storage.
Current owners have built extensive planting beds and truly supply the kitchen in season with fresh produce and herbs. Food cost is reduced significantly by utilizing the planting space and the quality supplied is second to none.

The Business
In February of 2005, after closing the purchase of the Oxford Inn, the current owners embarked on an extensive renovation of the building, at the same time, securing a new liquor license with off premise wine sales, and positioning to open a new business, Oxford Inn and Pope’s Tavern.

Securing coveted Zagat ratings of 27 for Food, 28 for Service, and 24 for Décor, the business continued to grow in it's reputation.

Pope’s is a certified Extern Site for the world renowned Culinary Institute of America, which not only increases the prestige of the business, but offers the opportunity of excellent kitchen staff on 18 wk appointments.
