Just over an hour’s drive from the nation’s capital lies Rockland Estate, a 25-acre farm estate in the heart of Washington County, Maryland. Built in 1803 by Colonel Frisby Tilghman, son of the first attorney general of Maryland, this extraordinary property is listed on the Maryland Inventory of Historic Sites and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. During the early 1800’s, the property was a well-known holding estate for slaves in the region, including James W.C. Pennington who escaped from Rockland and later became a renowned author and abolitionist. Because of this, the Department of the Interior has since recognized Rockland as an important and official location of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. During the last decade, the estate underwent an extensive renovation to add modern amenities while preserving its original features and historic charm.
