Just over an hour’s drive from the nation’s capital lies Rockland Estate, a 25-acre farm estate in the heart of Washington County, Maryland. Built in 1803 by Colonel Frisby Tilghman, son of the first attorney general of Maryland, this extraordinary property is listed on the Maryland Inventory of Historic Sites and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. During the early 1800’s, the property was a well-known holding estate for slaves in the region, including James W.C. Pennington who escaped from Rockland and later became a renowned author and abolitionist. Because of this, the Department of the Interior has since recognized Rockland as an important and official location of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. During the last decade, the estate underwent an extensive renovation to add modern amenities while preserving its original features and historic charm. Central air conditioning, meticulously landscaped gardens and walkways, an updated kitchen, and a basement wine cellar were all added to this unique home. Today, Rockland is comprised of a fully-updated 8,600 square-foot home, a turnkey horse farm, fenced pastures, bank barn, and paddocks. The three-story residence features 7 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 8 fireplaces, and hardwood floors throughout. A striking spiral staircase graces the formal living room and center halls of the home leading up to the third floor, capped by a large oval skylight. A second living room can be found off of the formal dining room, providing added space for entertaining. The family room features a wood-burning fireplace and wet bar. A sun room/sitting room, found at the back of the home, leads out to the deck overlooking the grounds. The updated gourmet kitchen with dual sinks, dual ovens, stainless steel Wolf appliances, granite countertops, two dishwashers, and separate wine cooler/fridge, completes the main level of the home. All of the bedrooms are located on the second floor of the room but are accessed by two separate staircases in distinct wings of the home. The master bedroom features exquisitely detailed moldings, a wood-burning fireplace, chandelier, and an updated bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and separate walk-in shower. The third floor provides additional storage space in the attic while the lower level houses a 3,000-bottle wine cellar. Outside, 25 acres of rolling pastures are complemented by two barns, equestrian facilities, and well-manicured gardens and walkways.
